Volume 7, Number 6 January  24, 2018

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

As promised, I am writing to you from the Norwegian Escape, somewhere between Cuba and Miami. It has been a phenomenal week at the annual Compliance Cruise, organized by the law firm of Pearson & Bernard. I understand more about all the ways to get in trouble with regulatory authorities, auditors, surveyors, the FBI and the IRS than I ever wanted to know.

To begin my report on what was discussed, I have summarized the excellent presentation by attorney Liz Pearson about the new Conditions of Participation. There is more there than initially meets the eye, especially regarding your responsibility to explain patient rights before starting to provide care.

We also found some interesting news this week (yes, there is such a thing as Internet connectivity at sea) about a new project CMS initiated and assigned to Abt Associates. They are assembling an expert panel and looking for you to make nominations.

In our Vendor Watch column, we have a number of announcements about partnerships and high-level board of directors appointments. Most importantly, the news report we placed at the top of the VW list has to do with your biggest problem, staffing. Take a look at a new company, Swift Shift, that believes it can help you with recruitment and retention.

Once on land, I will be heading directly to Homecare 100 in Orlando. I hope to see you there.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

Getting into compliance with the new CoPs is much harder than reading them and having a training session with your staff. Attorney Liz Pearson walked a group through it this week and helped agency owners see the tasks ahead of them more clearly.

CMS Seeks Nominees for Home Health Technical Expert Panel
CMS contractor Abt Associates needs 9-11 volunteers with experience as Home Health patients or family members to develop strategies to reduce hospital readmissions. You can nominate your own patients.

Designing successful bundles without collaboration between inpatient and post-acute (PAC) providers inhibits the cost-savings opportunities that make bundled payment a valuable model for hospitals and health systems.
